Will insurance pay to replace my fence after a hurricane?

Florida property owners know all too well that insurance costs are rising dramatically. If there is damage to your property, including to a fence or gate that has already been installed, you may have questions about whether or not those items can be covered by an insurance claim. The good news is homeowners insurance in Florida will typically cover the cost of repairing or replacing a fence that is damaged by a hurricane. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Your policy must have coverage for wind damage. Not all policies do, so be sure to check yours carefully.

The damage must be caused by a “covered peril”, or an event that your insurance policy explicitly covers. Hurricanes are typically covered perils, but there are some exceptions. For example, if your fence is damaged by a hurricane that is also accompanied by a tornado, your insurance company may not cover the damage caused by the tornado if tornadoes are not also a covered peril.

The damage must be sudden and accidental. If your fence is damaged over time due to weathering or neglect, your insurance company will not cover the repairs.

If your fence is damaged by a hurricane and you have coverage for wind damage, you will need to file a claim with your insurance company. The process for filing a claim will vary depending on your insurance company, but it will typically involve providing them with information about the damage, such as photos and estimates for repairs.

Once your claim is approved, your insurance company will pay for the cost of repairs up to the amount of your coverage. You may have to pay a deductible, which is a set amount that you are responsible for paying before your insurance company will cover the rest of the cost.

It is important to note that your insurance company may not cover the full cost of repairs. If the cost of repairs exceeds your coverage, you may have to pay the difference out of pocket.

If you are unsure whether your homeowners insurance will cover the cost of repairing your fence after a hurricane, you should contact your insurance company to discuss your policy. Contact FloriFence today if you need a quote to have a fence or gate repaired.
