Spring Care and Maintenance: Wood Fencing

Springtime in Florida typically brings unpredictable weather which can cause damage to unprotected wood. Therefore, it is important to start planning your wood fencing maintenance now. Once the rainy months start, your wood fencing can be susceptible to water damage, mold, mildew, and an influx of insects. Now is the time to wash and repair your fencing while it is still easy to do.

Below are some simple steps you can follow to ensure your wood fencing looks great now and into the summer months:

Inspect your wood fencing.

Before you begin maintenance on your wood fence, you should begin with a thorough inspection. Check for loose nails, broken pieces, and signs of insect damage on every board. If you notice significant damage, you should first contact FloriFence to repair or replace the boards.

Trim landscaping.

During the springtime, you’ll notice that your bushes, trees, and other landscaping will begin to grow rapidly. If any of this begins to grow around or lean against your fencing, you’ll need to trim it down. Leaning branches or overgrown bushes can cause problems with your fencing, so it’s important to be proactive in their maintenance during the spring season.

Clean your fencing.

Once you’ve trimmed away the vines and branches, you can carefully wash your wood fencing. Use a long-handled brush or pressure washer to wash off dirt and debris. However, you want to choose a sunny day so that your fence dries after washing. Too much water exposure can weaken the wood or cause other damage.

Repaint or reseal if necessary.

Once you’ve washed your fence, you can paint or reseal it if necessary using a roller brush. Depending on when your fencing was installed, this step might not be necessary. However, spring is the best time to repair or reseal because the summer months bring the harshest weather in Florida.

If you follow these four tips, you shouldn’t have any issues with your wood fencing throughout the spring and summer. If you have any questions, however, contact your local FloriFence team today!
