How To Prevent Fence Posts from Rotting

Wood fencing is incredibly popular in residential areas, but it comes with its problems. For example, wood fencing is the only fencing type we sell that is susceptible to water damage over time. Unlike vinyl, or metal fencing, wood will inevitably warp, rot, or age due to the elements, but how fast and severe this progression happens is up to you.

If you want to get the maximum service life out of your wood fencing, here’s what you need to do:

Choose the right wood.

Wood rot is common in Florida because of the rainy seasons we experience. If the wrong wood type is chosen, your wood fence won’t last more than a few summers before it starts to warp, rot, or split. In general, we recommend a cedar, cypress, or pressure-treated pine to prevent water damage. These wood types can also prevent pest damage.

Set your fence posts in gravel or concrete.

Wood rot often begins at the ground, where water is absorbed through the soil and retained for several hours or days after it rains. If your fence posts are not protected, they will begin to rot from the ground up, causing premature repairs and replacement fencing. If you want to create a sturdier and water-protected fence, set your posts in concrete to give it extra stability and a waterproof barrier.

Paint or stain it every few years.

Paint and wood stains go a long way toward protecting your fence from water damage. A high-quality paint or stain will seal your fence from water, dirt, and pests. It will also keep your fence looking brand new when the coat is refreshed every few years.

If you are worried about the longevity of wood fencing, talk to your FloriFence contractor about vinyl or metal options for your next installation. We can help you combine these options with wood fencing or replace an old wood fence with a water-resistant alternative to ensure you can love a fence for decades to come.
