Fencing is made to last a lifetime. Or, at least that is what most homeowners assume when they build fencing for their homes. While most fencing will last you for several decades, this is not true for every fence material on the market. And, it’s important to know what to expect with the fence you choose so you don’t end up disappointed in the long run.
Below are the four primary types of fencing FloriFence offers for residences and why each has a certain service life expectancy in Florida:
Wood fence – 10 to 15 years
Wood fencing only lasts a decade or two, depending on how well you take care of it. A wood fence without a protective coating may not even last this long, as it will be exposed to water, mold, and mildew. However, even with protective paint or stain, wood fencing will need to be replaced every 20 years at a minimum.
Chain link fence – 15 to 20 years
Chain link fencing is relatively durable, but often needs to be replaced every few decades as it will begin to warp, rust, or fall apart due to exposure. This is especially common on the waterfront as Florida’s hurricane season can take a toll on any fence installation. However, with proper care chain link fencing can last close to 20 years and be repaired when necessary.
Metal fence – 20+ years
Metal fencing, including wrought iron and aluminum, are some of the longest-lasting fence options on the market today. Aluminum is rust-resistant, which means it requires minimal maintenance to prevent water damage. Wrought iron is prone to rust but can be coated in a protective layer to prevent rust development. Because metal is so sturdy it can last upward of 20 years with proper care.
Vinyl fence – 20+ years
Vinyl fencing is typically considered to most durable fence option on the market because it can last as long as metal fencing, and requires very little maintenance to preserve. Vinyl fencing can warp or see changes in coloration over time, but is typically durable for decades with little to no maintenance required.
