How Different Fence Types Age

When most customers shop for their new fence, they are primarily concerned with its appearance on the day of installation. Will it match the style of the home? Will it look nice with the garden plants? Will it provide enough privacy for the pool this summer? While these concerns are valid and important, they are not what we consider first priority at FloriFence.

A fence installation will last 15 to 20 years or longer, which means you should think about how it will look as it ages just as much as how it will look brand new. Some fences age well without maintenance, while others will require more work to ensure they don’t become damaged or weathered over time. If you’re debating on the type of fence to install in your home, consider the aging process of these four materials:

Wood

Wood is the most difficult fence material to maintain because it needs regular paint or stain touch-ups to prevent water damage. It also needs to be cleaned regularly, or else its age will begin to show in a matter of three to five years. Wood can age gracefully, becoming more rustic over time, but if not well-maintained it will simply look old over time.

Chain Link

Modern chain link is less likely to rust than metal fencing options like wrought iron, but its age will show in the warping of the chain link and changes in the color and finish of the posts over time. While chain link can last 15 to 20 years with proper care, it may need to be painted in order to prevent visible signs of aging.

Metal

Certain types of metal fencing, such as galvanized steel and aluminum, will have very few signs of aging even after years of service. This is because they are water and rust-resistant and simply need to be cleaned and retouched over time. This makes them ideal for homeowners who want to minimize maintenance needs.

Vinyl

Vinyl is one of the best options for maintenance-free fencing. It will barely show signs of aging even after decades of service and only requires regular cleaning in order to achieve these results. While vinyl is more expensive than other fencing types, it is well worth it for the long-term value.
