Best Fencing for Small vs. Large Dog Breeds

Dogs aren’t just pets for most people – they’re loving companions who are just as much a part of the family as human friends and loved ones. Most dogs need a place to run outside and play, which is why fencing is a critical part of your backyard design. 

Even smaller dogs that don’t need outdoor space for exercise can benefit from a fenced-in backyard. It makes it easier to potty train them, and they will enjoy the sunshine and fresh air just as much as a large breed. However, fencing requirements for a Yorkie are very different from a Mastiff, which is why it’s important to talk to your fence contractor about dog fencing before beginning your project. 

Below are our recommendations for fence height and style based on your dog’s size and agility:

• For small breeds – Most smaller dogs can be easily contained in a short fence no more than three feet tall. This means that front yard fencing is just as viable an option as backyard fencing, offering more versatile options for your pet. However, let your contractor know if your dog likes to dig so they can add reinforcements to prevent escapes from holes under the fence. 

• For mid-size breeds – A pitbull or Australian shepherd may be easily contained in a five-foot fence, as they are shorter and won’t be able to climb. Any dog that is taller than 2.5 feet, however, may need a larger fence to keep them contained. 
• For large breeds – German Shepherds, Great Danes, and other large breeds need a six-foot fence to ensure they cannot jump or climb over, as these athletic dogs may try to do so when chasing a squirrel or dog on the other side. These breeds are also masterful at digging under fences, so be sure to let your fence contractor know you have one so they can reinforce the fence under the ground.
