Tips for Prioritizing Your Fence Needs

Oftentimes when our customers begin fence shopping, they look for inspiration from home magazines or design blogs. They fall in love with a beautiful design, and can’t wait to build something similar for their home. While we love making these dream fence ideas come to life, it is our job as contractors to ensure you get not only the fence you want, but the fence you need as well.

Fence installations are about more than making your backyard look nice. They should be tailored to your home’s landscaping, the environment in which your home is built, and the needs of your family. For example, a wooden fence may look nice, but it won’t last very long if you build it near a lake or waterfront property. And, while you may love the look of picket fencing, if it doesn’t keep your dogs inside the property, it’s not serving you the way a fence should.

Below are three different ways to prioritize your fence design to ensure you are happy with the long-term results, not just the look and style:

Safety

The top priority for most homeowners is creating a safe boundary for their property with fencing. A fence can keep pets and children out of the roads or keep unwanted wildlife out of your yard. It can also provide a kids’  safety barrier around pools. If you are concerned with any of these factors, you should choose a height and material that will serve your needs. We recommend wood, vinyl, or chain link that stands 5 to 6 feet for residential properties.

Security

If you live in a suburban or urban area where security may be an issue, invest in a fence that will deter burglars or vandals from coming onto your property. Tall privacy fencing or aluminum is more difficult for intruders to climb than chain link.`If you are investing in a fence for a commercial property, these are also great options and can be built taller for additional security.

Privacy

If you live in an urban or suburban area, privacy is likely an issue for your residence. If you want to be able to enjoy afternoons by the pool or grilling in the backyard without a view of the neighbors or the street, you should choose a fence that will provide an adequate barrier. Wood and vinyl are our top choices for privacy fencing because they are solid and will last a long time with proper care.
