Wooden fences are some of the most popular fence options in suburban areas. They have a unique look, provide plenty of privacy, and are more affordable than some options. The only downside to wood fencing is the upkeep. They require more maintenance than metal or vinyl and will likely need to be restored at least once to get the longest lifespan out of your fence.
If you have a wooden fence that has seen better days, follow these tips to skillfully restore it:
Step 1: Inspect the fence posts
Wood fencing deteriorates more quickly than any other fence type. Your fence posts are the foundation of the entire structure, so if they’re starting to fall apart, you may be better off replacing the fence entirely. However, if the fence posts are structurally sound and simply need some TLC, you can proceed with the restoration.
Step 2: Power wash and dry
One of the best ways to make an old wooden fence look newer is pressure washing or washing with a garden hose. Depending on how old the fence is, pressure washing may be too much for your fence. However, it is the easiest way to clean old caked-on dirt and begin removing stains.
Step 2: Sand the surface
Once the fence is washed and dry (wait at least overnight), then you can begin sanding down rough edges and surfaces. This will not only improve the appearance of your fence, but will make it safer for kids and pets. Sanding will also make it easier to apply a new coat of paint or sealant to your fence.
Step 4: Spot clean and make minor repairs
Once you’ve washed and sanded your fence, you should be able to easily identify any tough stains, water damage, or other imperfections in your fence. If certain rails are looking exceptionally weathered, you’ll want to replace them before moving onto the finish.
Step 5: Seal or paint
Sealing or painting your fence will help protect it from water damage and give it a nice, even appearance. Sealants typically don’t last as long but are easier to reapply because they don’t require sanding each time you add a new coat. Whichever you choose, be sure to pick a sunny weekend to allow the finish to fully dry.
