7 DIY Projects You Can Do With Old Fencing Material

FloriFence replaces as many fences as we do build brand new ones, which means our clients often have a lot of scrap leftover in their yards. While most of them throw away the old fencing material, we have seen some customers upcycle their old fencing and turn it into something completely unique.

If you’re an enthusiastic DIYer, there are several crafts and projects you can do with old fencing material. Check out some of these ideas for inspiration before we build your new fence!

Headboard

If you’re a skilled woodworker, you can use wood planks in good condition to repurpose your fence into a wood board. This isn’t always possible depending on how old or damaged the wood is, but with a nice sanding and stain, your fence can be used for a variety of decorative headboard options.

Garden table

Building a garden table is an easy first woodworking project that only requires a few power tools. Comprising a flat top and connecting pieces to your new fence, you can use the old wooden boards for a garden table or even a patio table.

Birdhouse

Birdhouses are simple yet popular woodworking projects that can be completely customizable. Save some of your old fencing material to use for a birdhouse project that the whole family can enjoy.

Planter box

Planter boxes are also simple DIY projects that are easily compatible with crap fence material. You can build both small ones for herbs and succulents, or large planter boxes for your seasonal veggie garden.

Clock

Shape your old fence posts into a circle to make your own custom clock. You can pick up the numbers, hands, and digital equipment from the local craft store and use your own wood supplies to create the face. DOn’t be afraid to paint your DIY clock for an even more unique style.

Holiday and welcome signs

Signs are easy to make with leftover fence material. Simply cut down the panels into the size you want, attach a hanger, and paint them with whatever design you want. Words like “Welcome,”  “Thankful,” “Joy,” and “Noel” are classic and look great with any home decor.

Trash can or AC Unit Cover

If you want a more involved DIY project to use up your scrap fence material, try building a trash can or HVAC unit cover. These square pens can hide unsightly yard equipment or keep unwanted critters from rooting through the trash. This is a more involved project for the experienced woodworker but can use up quite a bit of scrap material from your old fence.
