Fencing is a great way to enhance your property for both you and your furry friends. With a fenced-in backyard, you can let your pet roam around and play unsupervised. However, not all pets are compliant with different types of fencing. Some may dig under, while others will climb over the fence to escape to freedom.
If you want to pet-proof your fence, consider these solutions as you’re installing your new fence:
Install digging deterrents
Some pets will want to dig under a fence, and will have no problems doing so if you do not install a digging deterrent. Ask your FloriFence contractor about pouring cement or installing the fence into the ground to prevent digging dogs. This can also provide more stability for your fence. If you use something like chain link, you can also install cinder blocks under the ground to stop digging.
Ensure proper height.
Athletic dogs such as German shepherds, huskies, and retrievers may be able to jump over a low fence, especially if they are motivated by other dogs or a squirrel outside the yard. To prevent this from happening, make sure you build your fence to the maximum height of 6 feet for residential areas. Vinyl fencing is also more difficult for pets to climb because of its slick surface. If your dog is an avid climber, you may want to consider this material over other fencing choices.
Choose the right material.
As a rule of thumb, we recommend wood or vinyl fencing for pet-proof fencing. This is because these fence types are solid and therefore more difficult to climb or squeeze through. Chain link can easily be climbed by an athletic dog, and small dogs can occasionally fit through aluminum posts if they are spaced too far apart. If you think your dog can conquer aluminum or chain link, consider a different fencing option before your installation.
