Fence Security: Do I Need Barbed Wire?

Barbed wire is a common addition to commercial fencing for an added sense of security. It can be used for outdoor showrooms such as boating, RV, or car lots. And, in some rural communities, it is allowed in residential areas. However, there are many factors to consider before installing barbed wire onto your commercial or residential fence. 

Is it legal?

Barbed wire is not legal in all residential or commercial zones. Because it poses a danger to wildlife, children, and pets, it cannot always be installed without special permits or permissions from local governing authorities. You must first do your research before even considering adding barbed wire to your fencing. 

Is it safe?

Barbed wire is commonly found along prison sites or other high-security commercial properties, and there’s a good reason for it. The people onsite know the risks of climbing over or touching it. However, barbed wire is not always suitable for facilities where animals or children will be present. If damage occurs to the barbed wire it can get within reach of children or pets and cause serious injuries. Keep this in mind before installing barbed wire, especially if it is not done professionally. A poorly installed barbed wire fence can be a very dangerous addition to any property. 

Is it the best option?

Barbed wire certainly has a reputation for being effective at keeping intruders out, but it can be cut or removed with skillful hands. Electric fences are often used in place of barbed wire because they deter intruders and animals every time they are touched. Electric fences can also be more affordable than barbed wire fences in some circumstances.
